24-Hour Competent Person Fall Protection Training (EM 385)

Course Description:

This course includes in-class lectures including PowerPoint and video and hands-on scenarios applying theory discussed to practical workplace situations. This Competent Person training is a pass/fail program incorporating both written and practical examinations and is based on the requirements of the federal regulations and local legislation that will be discussed and reinforced. Attendees will learn practical solutions to difficult fall protection problems using appropriate tools and equipment.

Course content complies with the requirements within OSHA 1926.32(f), 1926.500, 1910 ANSI/ASSE Z359.2 code. (EM 385-1-1, updated March 2015) (24-hours) standards. Additionally, this course will prepare the participant with the knowledge and skills to perform the annual inspection and record-keeping under these standards.

Once the course is completed, attendees will be able to prevent fall hazards by utilizing a hierarchy of controls and upon completion will have a clear understanding of:

• The importance of OSHA fall protection statistics & Fall Protection Safety
• Applicable fall protection guidelines and how to adhere to them at work including the OSHA, ANSI/ASSE and UASCE EM385.
• Fall protection and the system of hierarchy of controls – Elimination, Prevention, Arrest, and Administrative.
• Personal fall protection systems (Harnesses, Anchorage, Body Support, and Connecting Means)
• Fall protection principles to include: Work Positioning Systems, Lifelines – Horizontal and Vertical, Ladder Climbing Systems, Rigid Rail Systems, Controlled Descent Devices
• Administrative controls to include: Diagrams of Fall Arrest System Clearance, Inspection of components of Fall Arrest Systems and Identifying Potential Fall Hazards: (Qualitative Risk Assessment, Quantitative Risk Assessment, Fall Hazard Detection Methods, Developing Fall Protection Plans)
• Rescue planning, Training Requirements, and Rescue Techniques

The course will give specific emphasis and training on the following construction operations:

• Overview of fall protection use and requirements Aerial Lifts (scissor lifts, boom lifts, personnel hoist)
• Overview of fall protection use and requirements on ladders, stairways, and scaffolding systems
• Overview of fall protection use and requirements during confined space operation and confined space rescue operations
• Overview of fall protection use and requirements for material handling and hoisting operations

Any fall protection equipment that is required will be demonstrated during class; however, students can bring their own personal fall equipment to class for both demonstration and use. Participants will be required to participate in Personal Fall Arrest Systems training (hands-on exercises), which may include: inspection procedures, donning procedures, fit test, selection, application and care of equipment.
